IT event: Design meets IT adesso invites visitors to the Bitkom event in Dortmund on 4 May: “What can the IT industry learn from the field of design?”

As co-organiser and main sponsor of the Bitkom “Design meets IT” event to be held at “Dortmunder U”, a centre for the arts and creativity in Dortmund, adesso AG will invite visitors to the occasion on 4 May. It will focus on the question of how the IT industry, and above all modern software development, can learn from the field of design. The event is free.

The products of our everyday consumer world are intentionally shaped by designers. Along with attractive design, they must take functionality and practicality into account. In many cases, high quality design is an element of a company's core brand. That trend increasingly includes the IT industry. With its stylish products, which are also easy to use, Apple has long been a trendsetter when it comes to IT design.

On 4 May, the digital industry association Bitkom will invite experts from the field of industrial design and information technology to a lecture and discussion event. Renowned speakers from the field of product development will offer first-hand reports from their areas of expertise and show how good design leads to success. Guests from the software development sector will be offered ideas about how to apply tried-and-tested design principles in the IT industry in order to improve their products and make them more user friendly.

Dr Kim Lauenroth is head of adesso's Requirements Engineering department and, as chairman of the Bitkom's “Software Designer” task force, is responsible for the topic. “Digitalisation is ubiquitous in our economy. There is no question that excellent IT competencies are essential for successful digitalisation. But they are not enough – design expertise is equally vital, because it is the only way to create products and services that convince customers and thereby ensure success in the digital world.”

After the lectures, the experts will offer guests from the IT industry tips from the field of design and advice about mistakes to avoid, even if the approaches used in product development cannot be directly applied to the IT sector.

The event is aimed at IT decision makers, software developers and architects, requirements and usability engineers, product managers and interface designers.

The following well-known industrial designers and design experts will speak at the event:

  • Andrea Augsten, design researcher and expert for future topics in design and transdisciplinarity
  • Andreas Enslin, Head of the Design Centre at Miele & Cie. KG
  • Marc Hassenzahl, Professor for Ubiquitous Design/Experience and Interaction at the University of Siegen
  • Frank Jacob, Professor for Interface Design at Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design, Kiel and founder of HID Human Interface Design GmbH, Hamburg
